Wendish Fest – Coffee Cake Bake Off & Coffee Cake Baking Class

Each year, we have a coffee cake bake off that benefits our scholarship program (the winning cakes are auctioned off and the rest head to our dessert booth). Winners get a special prize, not to mention bragging rights. Each year we also have plenty of people who say, “I wish I would have known sooner so that I could have participated.” Below, you will find all of the information you need in order to participate including the rules. We wanted to include those who have never made a coffee cake before and Joyce Jenke has graciously agreed to do a class in August to show you how. To reserve a spot for the class, please see the flyer below.

Wendish Fest Coffee Cake Bake Off — Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are the rules?
    • There is no entry fee.
    • Entries must be received at the Dessert Booth on the picnic grounds no later than 10:00 a.m. the day of the bake-off contest.
    • A 5-inch square piece of each entry will be used for judging. The remainder will be sold at the dessert stand or in the live auction.
    • Entries will be judged in one of four categories: (1) Kaese Kuchen, (2) Streusel Kuchen, (3) Special, and (4) Youth. The “Youth” category is limited to participants 14 years of age and younger.
    • All entries must be made from yeast-raised dough.
    • Entries in the “Kaese” and “Streusel” categories should be baked in a pan no smaller than 9”x13”. The entries may be delivered in baking pans or on disposable cake boards.
    • Entries in the “Special” category must be a full recipe. Any shape pan may be used (Bundt, angel food, 9”x13” sheet pan, etc.). The “Special” category may include cinnamon rolls, coffee cakes with fruit or nut toppings, etc.
  2. How should I prepare my coffee cake to take it to Wendish Fest?
    • Please bring your cake in or on a dish or board that you do not need to have returned to you. We get a lot of entries and the task of returning dishes is too much during Wendish Fest. Please cover your cake with plastic wrap or foil for drop off.
  3. When & where do I need to bring my coffee cake for Wendish Fest?
    • Entries must be received at the Dessert Booth on the picnic grounds no later than 10:00 a.m. the day of the bake-off contest.
  4. When & where will you announce the winners?
    • The judging will take place beginning at about 10:30am and winners will be announced at 12:30 from the stage on the pavilion.
