Wendish Fest 2022

We are thrilled to announce that the TWHS will host its 34th Annual Wendish Fest on September 25, 2022.

We have received a number or inquiries about the festival and wanted to address the most common ones here in an easy to find place.

When is Wendish Fest? It is always held the 4th Sunday in September. This year, it falls on September 25th! It is a one day fest held here in Serbin at the museum & at St. Paul Lutheran Churh’s Picnic Grounds.

What time should I plan to come? Wendish Fest kicks off with a church service at St. Paul Lutheran Church at 8:30 am. There is a Bible class and then a German service at 10:30. People usually begin to arrive at the picnic grounds around 10:00am when the exhibits and demonstrators open their booths. The museum is open from 10:00 to 3:00. A meal (Wendish noodles, sausage, sauerkraut, green beans, pickles, fresh bread, peaches, and beets) is served starting at noon. At 12:45, we hold a live auction of the winning cakes from the coffee cake competition, benefiting our scholarship program. If you just want a single dessert, you can head over to the dessert table to buy single slices of homemade coffee cake. There is music all day, but the Shiner Hobo Band will play from 1:00 to 4:00. There is a silent auction from 10:00 to 2:00 and children’s activities from 1:00 to 3:00. At 2, a snack booth opens up with lots of yummy treats. At 2:30 you can sign up for a washer pitching tournament (which starts at 3). Last, there is a cross-cut sawing demonstration at 4:45.

What can I expect? If you didn’t read the schedule above, start there. Wendish Fest is an annual day of celebrating Wendish history and culture with special guests, unique activities, folk life demonstrations and delicious food offering attendees an enjoyable Wendish heritage experience. Expect a large crowd and lots of fun! This is a family friendly event and we hope you will join us!

What should I wear? Wendish Fest is held in late September and it is usually still very hot outside in this part of Texas. Please dress for the weather, as most of the festival is held outside. This year, many ladies around here will celebrate the TWHS’ 50th anniversary by wearing bonnets in honor of the wonderful ladies who started the society. You can make one yourself but we have them in our gift shop in a variety of styles and colors and will also sell them at Wendish Fest to help everyone look their best. Men, please join the celebration by wearing a straw hat.

Where can I stay? On our website, we have a listing of our hotel partners int he nearby town of Giddings under “Visit.” Book early as there are a number of events in the area in late September.

Do I need to bring cash? We do recommend bringing cash for a few reasons. We rely on WiFi and tablets to take credit cards and sometimes have problems keeping all of the devices connected, so you might have to wait a little longer each time you pay with a card. When you pay with a card, we have a 4% credit card fee on each transaction (excluding donations), so you will save a little money by paying cash. We absolutely take cards, but with a crowd this size, we think it is easier to pay with cash.
