45th Annual Texas Folklife Festival
The 45th Texas Folklife Festival will be held this year during June 10-12 on the grounds of the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Institute of Texan Cultures. According to David Goeke, a TWHS member who lives in San Antonio, has volunteered at the TWHS booth for many years, and who will no doubt be involved again this year, the Folklife Festival “…used to be a four day affair, Thursday through Sunday. And we also had a time of worship on Sunday morning prior to the festival starting in the afternoon. I fondly remember Emma [Wuensche], one of the ‘founding five’, with whom I always joked, and who never called me by my first name, nor a title, but just ‘Goeke.’ ‘Goeke, come here!’ ‘Goeke, go sell the people our noodles!’ She would often proceed to tell me a story in German and almost always ended it by saying, ‘Das ist wahr’ (That is true)…except that her German accent had been ‘Texanized’, saying ‘war’ instead of ‘var.’ It was wonderful having those little worship services before the festival opened on Sunday.”
TWHS will again have a booth at the festival thanks to Ron Knippa with his family and many friends who do all the hard work of setting up, cooking, selling, and otherwise making sure that the TWHS is well represented.
Contact the museum if you want to spend a fun morning, afternoon, or full day helping in the TWHS booth. Dress code for volunteers is dark slacks and white shirt for men, and red or blue skirt and white blouse for women. Volunteers are provided with free parking passes and festival admission passes, so you can spend a couple of hours volunteering and enjoy the rest of the day at the festival. Bring a smile and a hand! It’s a lot of fun! And if you happen to see David Goeke while you are there, remind him to go sell those noodles!
